Digitial slr camera's And flash guns?

righty, im not a professional photographer, but want to get into this as a hobby, so therefore im goin to splash out on a digital slr, but ive noticed that some slr's have built in flashes that pop up and some you can buy flash guns for that clip onto the top. which is recommended.....is there a big difference having a built in flash..

In general, most consumer/prosumer models of DSLRs have built in flash units while most "professional" models do not. One reason many cameras include built in, pop up flashes on top is because they can be used as a focusing aid to improve the response of auto-focus mechanisms. Some drawbacks to using a built in flash are -

1. It is the second worst possible location for a flash (underneath the camera would be worse). It greatly increases the occurrence of "red-eye" and gives very "flat" lighting.
2. The flash must be relatively low power or it would drain the camera batteries too quickly.
3. When used as a focusing aid these types often emit a number of pre-flash bursts that are annoying and sometime confusing to the subject.

One advantage of the built in units is that they usually have TTL (Through The Lens) exposure measurement that controls the flash duration to automatically give the correct exposure.

Most of these cameras also have a "flash shoe" to hold larger, more powerful units and some have a cord connection for plugging flash units directly into the camera. If they don't have a cord connection one can usually be made with an adapter on the flash shoe.

Add on flashes provide the capability to raise the flash higher above the lens and many have swivel and/or tilt features all of which help improve the flash lighting. Some of these models do provide TTL exposure coordination with the camera but that is an important feature to determine BEFORE purchasing.

For general purpose photography I would start out using the built in flash unit and, as you learn about the pros and cons of using supplemental flash units, evaluate your needs for a separate unit as you gain experience.

One word of caution most DSLRs are designed for MUCH LOWER TRIGGER VOLTAGE for their flash units than 35mm cameras were. This means you need to be careful when selecting supplemental flash units for DSLRs to make sure the Trigger Voltage is not too high. Most new flash units are fine but old or used ones may need an adapter to suppress the excess voltage.
