I would like to take pictures of the sky. HELP!?

I know nothing about camers. Only knowledge I have is my digital camera (Olympus Stylus 720 SW). And yet, I do not know what all the jargon involved. ANYWAY, I love to take pictures of the sky. I go to the desert a lot, and I would love somehow capture the stars and the moon, perhaps with a desert scene, perhaps only the sky alone. Never mind the real sun or large planes. Nights only beautiful desert. All my camera makes the moon is turning into a blurry white spot and the whole landscape is black. Is there a camera lens in front rookie package that can be do what I'm looking for? Any advice or simple instructions. I just need a clear shot of a starry night ... or the moon. All there for someone like me? THANKS!

First, get a tripod. Second, the 720 SW has a maximum shutter speed of 4 seconds, which almost certainly will not be enough for the stars. Moon, yes - is, after all, an object illuminated by the sun. So we will need a tripod and a camera that has the ability to shoot longer exposures. Some are made up to 30 seconds, some have a bulb mode which means that the shutter stays open while you hold the button (but a statement of cable is a better idea of what is touching and moving the camera even a little). Additional note: the moon is moving so fast if it looks or not. Even with a tripod you get some longer exposures blur that. To get the stars and the landscape in total darkness, you're going to need some long exposures - 5 to 15 minutes.
